this hurts me in profound, deep, unsettling ways.
I see Israel when I look at them.
I forgot how hard it is to go to a shelter and see the animals locked up in cages, unwanted, because they are full grown and not a cute puppy to ruin and wind up at a shelter in a few months…
and that was what hurt me more than anything else giving Shifra back—imagining her lost and confused, back in the cage, wondering what she did to put her there. didn’t she love me and I her? and yet I loved Judah more.
