The last of my new babies. I rehomed the rabbits and the cats. I had to return Shifra. I got a new cat (I’m a one-cat-a-time girl) in February named Spokane and I had to get rats if I was going to avoid getting another dog this year. So two rats…brothers…black dumbos, one velveteen (curly fur & whiskers), the other standard. The one in focus is named Cullen. The one in the background is Nevada. Both are named after romance novel heroes. Cullen is obviously after Edward a la “Twilight” while Nevada is named after Nevada Blackthorn from Elizabeth Lowell’s “Warrior”. I’ve reread that book probably ten times.
To be honest I didn’t need to get any more pets but I have a serious addiction. For now the need is assuaged. The boys are 6 weeks old, born 1/30/2009. I drove 90 miles one way to get them but the day was perfect for driving and it felt good to get out of the house. I don’t think that even a year ago I would’ve done such a thing—even though I traveled over 200 miles one way to get Simona…that’s a whole different story.
I still have all of my rat supplies…the big cage that I could never quite part with…it’s now perched in the little closet by the bathroom and crack whore room, separate from the dogs by the baby gate since the litterbox is in the same closet under the shelf, out of the way. The cat eats there as well. It’s convenient.
Cullen & Nevada are huge for their age. My last boys were about that old when I got them in October of 2000, they were named Adam & Ian. Both were rex dumbos, Adam was a champagne hooded and Ian was a beautiful blue hooded boy. Big, squishy boys. They were almost three when they died. Old age sets in fast in rats. Possibly the only downside to loving them…they die SO soon…
I can’t really picture getting another dog until one of my pack dies. Hopefully that is a long, long way off. I can wait. And then I will get another pit bull or I’ll get a Cane Corso. But if my plan for Judah to live forever comes true…
So for now I am truly content with what I have. My house continues to look better (even if other people can’t tell, I see a huge difference) and with the weather improving I’ve attacked the backyard. I would love to plant a garden with a pond, a little place of respite to spend quiet time reading or just enjoying being outside.
Soon, soon, soon.
